Daniel Frey studied History (2011–2014) and Archival Studies (Geschichtsforschung, Historische Hilfswissenschaften und Archivwissenschaft, 2014–2018) at the University of Vienna and the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (IÖG). Since 2016, he is project employee at the Department of History (“Benediktiner, Kirchenreform und Staat in Österreich, 1720–40”). His research interests are high and late medieval noble patronage networks of lower Austrian monasteries, comparative history of religious orders in late medieval urban and rural context as well as a focus on the history of Stift Göttweig (Lower Austria) in the Middle Ages and its role on the political scene in c. 18.

His current PhD-Thesis sheds light on categories of belonging and practices of community-building in late medieval hinterland towns with a focus on interactions between “secular” and “ecclesiastical” communities (c. 14–16).
